It’s Kara!

A few weeks ago, I got so sick of my hair!  So, I made every change I could think of.
I cut it off, I colored it, & I got bangs! Woohoo!

It’s a new Kara!

There’s a lot of Target going on in this picture!  The jacket is from Target sales rack, as well as the pants. Nothing was over $7!  Don’t you just love this scarf?  Our dear friends came to visit this weekend that live in India.  India, if you didn’t know, is the land of beautiful cheap scarves!!  They gave me this gorgeous scarf.  If I was an extrovert, I would have squealed!!  I couldn’t have picked out a prettier one.

Hope you all are doing well!!!

Just saw this video and couldn’t help but share it!
Hope it inspires you to be AWESOME on this Valentine’s Day  YEAR!

Not COOL, Robert Frost!

I love that part!  The best path for our lives that pushes us to live in the moment and be awesome is not the easy path!

Hope you take some time to dance today!

Making New Habits

Hey gals!

Have any of you made any new year’s resolutions?  Me Either!  (that’s if you said no)
I figured I would get a few weeks into 2013 and then set some goals…just for me! If I break them, it’s okay.  BUT, like my post vacation goals, it is a time for me to reevaluate and make some goals.  My 6 month no new clothes goal is going pretty well!  In 2013, we hope to bring a baby home OR be close to bringing our baby home.  So, I need to make good habits NOW, before my life turns upside down!

6 Month Goals/New Habits:

1. Wake up earlier! I don’t have to be at work until 9 am…sometimes 11 am.  That should give me nice morning time to get stuff done, but I’m a slacker!  So, I am trying to wake up in enough time to get other things done in the morning besides watching morning TV & taking a shower.

2. Exercise 5x’s a week!  TYPICAL, I know.  This is one I’ve been trying since the new year and am doing really well.  So, I feel good about it.  I try to do P90X, but it is a lot for one week.  So, I do it, but at my own pace.

3. Say NO to photography gigs! THERE I finally said it…I’m turning in my camera. Well, not really!  Just for photography sessions, weddings, and favors.  I can’t give people the attention they need and therefore it makes me hate it.  Uggh, isn’t that terrible!  I used to love taking pictures…now not so much.  I like doing it for my own purposes, but not for anything else!  I really want a new lens for fun, BUT just for family use! Oh, I feel so much better saying that out loud!

4. Eat Healthier.  So, I am still not too old and in good health, but I have high cholesterol.  Isn’t that terrible?!  I love pizza, mexican food, chocolate, bread, muffins, and all the other not so good for you food.  I have been doing pretty well with this the last few weeks, BUT my friend introduced me to Wheat Belly! I am going to start next Monday with this plan…cutting out wheat!  Apparently it spikes your blood sugar. Cutting it out of your diet can be beneficial in so many areas (triglycerides, skin, energy, etc).  I’ve bought the book and cookbook.  I’ve made a plan!  It will take dedication, but I think it will be a good change for our family.  Even without kids now, I worry about what I will feed my kids.  There is so much out there that is NOT good! I want my kids to have good habits from the beginning.  So, that means I need good habits NOW!

Since this will take lots of dedication and discipline, I am going to reward myself for a job well done!  It will take two weeks to overcome cravings, but even more time to create habits. So, if I go one month without breaking the plan, I will let myself buy a new purse.

5. Give up Dr. Pepper! Oh my, this is going to be hard.  I have cut back to only drinking them every other day.  I drink lots of water now.  BUT I want to give it up completely!  Wish me luck.

AND now, because every post needs a cute picture, here is me and my nephew, Judah!

So, tell me about you!  Are you making any new habits for 2013?

Stripes & Mustard

Sweater (Urban Outfitters); Shirt (Loft); Jeans (Loft)

Hey Gals!  I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas & New Year.  I raked in the gifts.
Want to hear?

1. AAA Insurance (Yep! That’s right!)
2. $50 to buy what I want! (Mustard Sweater & THIS awesome watch)
3. Loft Gift Card (bought skirt, shirt above, red chords, & another shirt)
4. Antropologie Gift Card (bought gift for sister, set of plates, & butter dish)
5. 2 scarves.
6. Theater tickets to go with my friend.
7. Jewelry.
8. Sequin Sweatshirt.
9. Target Gift Card (bought necessities)
10. GC for restaurant & GC for the movies.

See…so much stuff! :D   With the gift cards I was able to buy at least 1, maybe 2 things off my list!  Mustard sweater & red chords.  The chords are not skinny, but still I love them.  I am about ready to give in and just buy a new chambray shirt at any store I find it.  I haven’t been able to find one at the thrift stores or at the gift card stores.  I need to try the consignment stores.  Tulsa girls, have you found any great consignment stores in town?

And because my husband decided to pose me and liked the picture:

So, how was your Christmas?  Did you get anything off your shopping list?

~Kara

PS-On a shopping trip with mom today, she bought me a black jacket similar to Laura’s on sale at Target! SCORE!!

Merry Christmas!

The Lauras & The Karas all got to see each other Saturday!
And imagine what the husbands discussed, “the plight of being married to a blogger!”
So, we let them get in on the action and, as you can see, they ate up the spotlight.

You may have seen them around here and there on some posts, but allow us to officially introduce you to Mr. Kara & Mr. Laura!

Our friendship does exist in real life!  It even began there.
So, here we are!

Merry Christmas from the Everyday Present family!

The In Between

I am pretty blessed to blog with a very stylish lady, Laura! Her outfits the last few weeks have been awesome, but what did I expect? I, on the other hand, am a bit more unstylish somedays.
Unstylish…that’s a word, right?

So, here’s what I’ve been wearing in between real outfit photos!

Casual Friday:  Just what you think.  A relaxed day at the office.  Saturday Night Out: You’ve seen a version of this outfit before…I wear stuff twice! There, I said it.  Confession time over! Work 2: You can see I love my green jacket.  I’ll say, I really love this outfit! Lazy Day: Not too proud of this outfit.  I have this polka dot bubble dress and it is comfortable.  So, I wore it today!

Here is one in real life:

White t-shirt: Target; Skirt: Gap; Jacket: 2011 TXSC Swap find;
Scarf:
Gift from Jordan (yes, the country)

This was what I wore for a relaxed day at the office.  I wouldn’t say it was ground breaking, but I liked it.  The jacket is one of my favorites and I loved it buttoned. I also really liked the contrast of colors.  The scarf is just beautiful!  Next time I wear this, I’ll probably fashion the scarf just a bit differently.  Probably more like THIS.

Now, you tell me!  How many days out of 7 would you say you feel on trend or stylish?

(I would probably go with 2!)

Happy Friday!

(Did you notice the leaning star?  It’s…uh…”leaning”)

A Vintage Christmas

As many of you know, I work at a local homeless shelter.  Our crew can usually be found in jeans and shelter sweatshirts/polos. So, when they started planning our Christmas Party, they decided to make it a vintage 1940′s Christmas theme! You know I got excited!  As did a few of the other ladies at work.  We all started planning! To make it even better, they were giving away a $50 cash price for best dressed man & woman. To which I said “BRING IT ON!”

The Mosebys!

Get ready for lots of pictures!!
Let’s start with my outfit, since it is my style blog.

Dress: $3 Goodwill; Hat: Antique; Hose: Kohl’s

I was feeling “okay” about the dress, but then I threw on my fur coat…I squealed!!

Fur Coat: Gift from Sara; Gloves: Borrowed

All the dinner guests voted on best dressed!
Let me just say…I was feeling competitive.
With the no self nomination rule, I had to vote for someone else.
I wasn’t about to vote for Amy…good strategy too!
So, I voted for my co-worker that looked cute.

Great Strategy, because Amy and I tied! Winning us both $50!
Best dressed man didn’t go to my man…it was rigged.
Amy’s husband, Brian, won!
Here we all are:

Me & Josh with Brian & Amy

My coworker, Mindy. She let me borrow the gloves & Josh’s hat.

Me & Joel

Everyone looked great!  Many didn’t dress theme, but still everyone looked great.  Strange to see a usual jeans crowd in suits and dresses! We had a great time at Jazz Hall of Fame with friends!

Merry Christmas!

Christmas w. the Mosebys

Hey gals!  I’m back…
Thanks for the small break.  I have been pretty sick the last few weeks! My husband was on a pretty long trip and I was home sick w/o him…Then, was so sick Monday night that I couldn’t pick him up at the airport! I should just call it quits for the year and stick to my house.  Apparently, I’m allergic to contact with human beings!  Laura was lookin’ good, while I was curled up on the couch with my flamingo pajama pants and t-shirt!

So, while I was on the couch I stared at my lovely Christmas decorations all day. If you haven’t seen our rock star house, check it out!  I don’t wanna brag, but it’s awesome…we had NOTHING to do with that.  In our home, we usually stick to a very simple modern clean style that you see in that house tour.  However, for Christmas, I wanted the pretty cluttered look. Is that a style? You know…the one that my aunt has mastered.  Tons of cool detail all thrown together into awesomeness!  Homey is another term.   So, my husband let me go a little crazy.  I think he figures he’ll have his clean minimalist design back in a few weeks!

Please note, I didn’t have a wide angle lens on me…so, this is as far back as I could get. The house tour is deceiving w/ the wide lens.

I love sentimental Christmas decorations.  I love pulling out the decorations and thinking “Ah, I remember when we bought that on our honeymoon!”  I have decorations from all different countries.  I have homemade decorations.  Decorations that people have given me and others that I bought recently at Hobby Lobby for $1! Here are some of my favorite details:

1. A little decoration for our chairs. 2. Homemade anthro looking snowglobe. 3. Honeymoon ornament. 4. Lantern. 5. Metal tree w/ some favorite ornaments. 6. craft project this year (pinterest). 7. Pinterest inspiration that reminds me of our adoption. 8. Ornament that I love. 9. Jar full of random junk…w/cookie cutter.

I have a pretty normal tree with random ornaments!  I don’t usually have a theme for my Christmas tree.  Growing up our tree was just random and I loved it.  I thought there was a special beauty to the lack of design.  Everything told a story.  I’m sure you have similar memories, but my mom always told stories when we got the decorations out.  My stocking has the best story.  My parents didn’t have much money my first Christmas.  So, mom had to make my stocking.  She tears up telling the story.  It is a simple felt stocking with a hand stitched lil girl on it.  I LOVE it!!

I hope you are enjoying this wonderful time of year!  DO NOT get caught up in the holiday rush.  Your kids don’t need a million gifts.  Your parents will get over it, if you need to draw some boundaries for your family!  If you are running late, because of traffic, everyone will understand. Do what you need to do to make this an enjoyable Christmas.  BE PRESENT!!!

(If you need a pep talk, just let me know!  I refuse to get in a rush during Christmas and I refuse to let others ruin this fabulous holiday.)

So, what is your favorite memory of Christmas that floods back to you when you break out the decorations?

Fancy Casual Lace

My boss’ wife walks into the office with the cutest lace dress & blazer.
One of the hostesses at The Christmas Gathering wore the prettiest red lace dress…

My dear friend, Belky, GAVE me a blue lace dress!
Who’s excited?  ME!!!
Am I the only one that has noticed this huge new trend of lace?

I can’t wait to just wear this dress, but yesterday I needed a more toned down look.
So, I went to my pinterest board for inspiration.  Don’t act like I’m the only one that does this!!

This pin was the perfect inspiration for me!
I just grabbed my new pretty dress and my favorite boat sweater!
BAMMM!

Dress: Modcloth (gift); Sweater: Thrifted; Boots: Target

Loved this look for Sunday.  I’m not sure if I’ll wear it again, but it was perfect for a lazy Sunday morning.

I felt pretty daring all day!
Do you have any daring outfits you are wanting to try?
Happy Monday!

The Giving in Thanksgiving

Hey gals!
Thanksgiving is less than a week away.  Grab your pumpkin spice latte and let’s chat.
If you didn’t know this, I work at a social services organization in Tulsa.  We have a big turkey distribution next week and we are so short on food!  Like 20 tons short…it’s true, I double triple checked that figure.  There are so many years that we have to do our part and then just have faith that the food will arrive.  However, this year is much different.  With the mind numbing elections, an early Thanksgiving, and warm temperatures, people haven’t thought about giving as much as other years.

Did you know that 1 in 4 kids in America is food insecure?  That means that 25 percent of American children do not have confidence in eating three meals today.  They, hopefully, will get two meals at school, but usually go home to an empty fridge. OR junk food in the fridge…don’t get me started on their limited access to good food.  There’s food and then there’s good food.  You know the fresh fruits, veggies, and chicken.  Let’s get real.  A bag of chips is much cheaper than veggies.

(removed by Kara…bogging down the site)

So, gals…let’s do something this weekend.

1. Research who you can give to in your town:
Feeding America or  AGRM are two great places to start.

2. Head out to the grocery store and pick up some items:
Turkeys, stuffing, gravy, potatoes, canned corn, green beans….

3.  Then drop it off at the organization in your town that needs it!

At work, we have a common saying, “Hope begins with a meal.”

Happy Thankgiving, gals!
Now tell us!  Who in your town are you giving to this Thanksgiving?

~Kara M

(PS- it is probably too late to volunteer for Thanksgiving.  BUT that is okay. You can still help.
Grab your kids and pick up some food for the local shelter or food bank!)
