Blog? What’s that?

Do you want to hear something shocking?

I haven’t read a blog in over a month.  (So maybe it’s not shocking, but if you knew me, you’d at least be surprised.)  If there’s anything major that I’ve missed, you’ll have to let me know, because I really don’t see catching up on that much of a backlog.

I say that just to emphasize how busy I’ve been lately.  (Well… busy but also just too tired to do anything but work, take care of my little girl, and go to sleep.)

But I’m trying to get back into the swing of things, so here’s an outfit post.  This has been one of my favorite casual outfits this summer.  Nothing spectacular, but it’s simple, easy, and comfy… perfect for me. :)

I hope you have been well and are looking forward to fall.

If You’re Happy and You Know It…

I know that I’m biased, but I can’t help but think this is the cutest thing ever…

I hope you’re all having a wonderful week and spending time doing things that make you HAPPY!

Variation on a Theme

As I was uploading these pictures, I realized this outfit is very similar to the one Laura wore on the 4th of July.  (I hope you don’t mind, Laura.  Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, though, right?)

How has everyone’s summer been going?  I’ve been so busy I feel like I haven’t had time to catch my breath.  I’ve really enjoyed it, though, and I have a couple fun things I’m looking forward to in the near future.  I can’t wait to share them with you.

Because things have been so busy, though, I’m having to compromise a little on my picture taking.  I kept waiting for some free time to go take nice photos outside, but then I realized all those free times had disappeared.  I hope you’ll forgive my indoor pictures, my cut off feet, and my end-of-a-long-day hair.

Steal of a Deal

I’m not always the most savvy shopper, so you may be way ahead of me, but I thought I’d share this awesome deal.  You know that JCrew dress I was drooling over a few weeks ago in this post?  Well, it’s on sale here now for $69.99 (orig. $198) plus an additional 30% off with code “MUSTHAVE,” making it only $48.99.  But wait!  There’s more!  If you’re lucky, like I was, and your local JCrew still has this in stock, you might be able to pick it up for just $27.99 like I did this week (only $30 after taxes… that’s like 85% off)!  I am so excited and can’t wait to wear my new favorite dress.

I hope everyone has had a great week and is ready for the weekend!

Summer Formula

I’m sorry I haven’t been around recently.  Sometimes life just gets a little busy and other priorities require a bit of extra time.  But I’m back now.

How have you been?  Has everyone been keeping up with the Colorado Springs wildfire?  Thankfully, no injuries have been reported, but what an awful thing–so many people have lost their homes and all of their belongings.  I’m praying for them and for the firefighters who are struggling to contain the blaze before more damage is done.

On a lighter note, here are a few outfit photos for today.  I followed a really simple formula that I stole learned from this girl: wear white on bottom with a brightly colored print top.  Boom!  Outfit done!  (I know, I just totally blew your mind, right?)  Okay, okay, so it may not be a novel idea… in fact, it may be completely obvious to everyone out there but me.  Still, I really enjoyed creating this look.  It’s so crisp and happy… perfect for summer.

Anyone else have any go-to outfit formulas?  (Seriously, I’m always in need of new ideas.)

Monochrome

One of the things I love about fashion blogs is the abundant inspiration out there.  I would never have thought to put together a monochromatic look unless I’d seen it in blogs, at jcrew, and on this lady.  I always thought that you needed to wear complimentary/coordinating colors in an outfit… not the same color (or different tones of the same color).  The same color would be boring, right?  Umm… wrong.  I’m seeing monochromatic looks all over and loving them!  I can’t wait to try it with other colors!

Have any of you tried the monochromatic look yet?  What do you think?

Soap or Something Like It

A few weeks ago, I decided I’d like to try making my own soap.  My grandmother has made it several times, and I helped my sister make it once.  I was familiar with the process, then, and thought it would be a fun project.  So last week, a friend of mine came over while our husbands were golfing, and we made lye soap (or at least, our first attempt at it).

We used the easy shea butter cold press recipe from this site.  We added some tangerine essential oil for scent and some orange crayon for color.  (I don’t know if that’s an accepted practice in soap making, but my grandmother had done it once, and it turned out okay, so that was good enough for me.)

I think I was too impatient, though, with the stirring.  I didn’t stir the soap long enough (letting it get to the “trace” point) before I put it into the trays/molds, so when I popped the soap out of the trays, I discovered that it had separated some.  The layered effect might have been nice if it was just a visual layering, but some of the oils (including, I think, the shea butter) had risen to the top layer, so that the top was too oily/greasy to be a soap.

I scraped off the top layer (and smoothed out the edges a bit), and wound up with “acceptable” soap.  I’ve used it a couple times, and it works fine, but it’s not the smooth, moisturizing soap I was after, since so many of the good oils had separated out.  If you’re interested in trying it, yourself, here are some directions:

Ingredients:

Coconut Oil 16 oz.
Olive Oil 18 oz.
Palm Oil 16 oz.
Shea Butter 4 oz.
Tallow 16 oz. (I used shortening)
Totals 70 oz.
5% Superfatted Lye Amount 9.815 oz.
Ounces of water recommended 23.100 oz.

Start with a pyrex or stainless steel container with the water in it.  Wearing gloves and goggles, slowly pour the lye into the water while stirring.  The lye solution will get very hot (over 200 degrees).  After the lye all appears to be dissolved, heat your oils/fats in a large stainless pot on the stove until they are all melted.  Remove from heat.  Put a thermometer in your lye solution and one in your oil solution.  You want them to equalize in temperature around 115 degrees.  If the lye is still much warmer than the oil, you can set the lye container in an ice bath (and vice versa, if the lye has cooled below the temperature of the oils, you can set the oil pot in an ice bath).  When both mixtures are at about 115 degrees, slowly pour the lye mixture into the oil mixture while stirring.  Stir the combined mixture until a trace forms behind the spoon (or when you lift the spoon out, the drizzle from the spoon sits on top of the mixture momentarily before sinking back in).  At this point you can add your essential oil, coloring, or any other additives (orange zest, lavander, etc.) if you choose.  Then carefully ladle the mixture into molds or trays to set up.  It will likely take 24-72 hours to set up completely.  Remove from the molds and enjoy your homemade soap!

Thunder Up

You may have heard that the OKC Thunder are playing the Lakers in the NBA playoffs right now.  I wore this outfit in support of my home team on Friday.

Unfortunately, they lost their game on Friday.

But… they’ve won the other three of the four games they’ve played.

One more win and they claim the series, moving them to the conference finals (most likely against San Antonio).

I’ve never been a huge fan of professional sports (favoring college sports, where I can root for my alma mater), but it’s so fun to have a local pro team to root for.  It’s awesome to see how the entire state has rallied behind the Thunder, too… so cool that a sports team can bring the community together.

Are any of you watching the playoffs?  Who are you rooting for?

Spring Silhouettes

Lately, I’ve really been gravitating towards florals (I guess that’s typical of spring and summer), so I thought I’d put together a couple of outfits based on my favorite silhouette and two of my favorite trends right now: florals and bold pretty colors.

Spring Silhouette

I especially love the Ella dress.  What trends are you loving as we head from spring into summer?

Sophie’s Style

Sophie loves being outside… I mean LOVES it.  As in, sometimes she cries for 3 minutes straight when we have to go back inside.  She doesn’t really care what she’s doing outside.  She could be swinging at the park, exploring a new place, or just looking at the grass in our backyard.  As long as she’s outside, she’s content.  I love being outside, too, so I’m pretty okay with it (except the crying at the end part… that’s not so fun).  With the weather being so nice, I’m sure we’ll be spending plenty of time at the pool, the zoo, the playground, and maybe the ballpark.  I’m thinking this is going to make for a pretty great summer.

Sophie’s shirt and skirt (and bloomers) are from Gap (purchased at a garage sale).
